The Foundation urges the governments of South Africa and European nations to emulate Switzerland’s example. For nearly four decades, Hamas has operated within South Africa, cultivating deep-rooted networks and enjoying the hospitality of government officials and civil society leaders. South African soil has become a base for Hamas’s fundraising and propaganda, with its leaders repeatedly welcomed for official visits and public engagements. This longstanding relationship stands in stark contrast to the values enshrined in South Africa’s own constitution, which guarantees the protection of its citizens from violence and the upholding of democratic norms.

It is imperative that the South African government now act decisively to align its policies with its constitutional obligations and the expectations of the international community. By following Switzerland’s lead and enacting a ban on Hamas and its front organizations, South Africa would demonstrate genuine commitment to the rule of law and the safety of its citizens, while sending an unequivocal message that terrorism has no place in a democratic society.

Similarly, while the European Union has taken important steps by imposing sanctions and listing Hamas as a terrorist organization, further harmonization and enforcement are needed to ensure that no member state provides sanctuary or financial facilitation to such groups. Switzerland’s comprehensive approach serves as a model for effective, principled action that balances security, justice, and the protection of humanitarian activities.
