June 19, 2025Liberty Values & Strategy Foundation Applauds UK Decision to Deny Entry to Julius Malema
For immediate release
June 18, 2025 - The Liberty Values & Strategy Foundation (LVS Foundation) strongly commends the United Kingdom's Home Office for its principled decision to deny entry to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, citing his support for proscribed terrorist organizations and inflammatory rhetoric that threatens democratic values and minority rights.
As an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to defending liberty, democracy, and human rights, the LVS Foundation recognizes this decision as a necessary measure to protect the fundamental principles of dignity, freedom, and justice that form the cornerstone of democratic societies.
Upholding Democratic Values Against Extremism
The UK Home Office's determination that Malema's presence is "not conducive to the public good" aligns perfectly with the LVS Foundation's commitment to confronting threats to freedom and building public trust in institutions worldwide. The formal denial, issued on June 17, 2025, represents a significant stance against individuals who undermine social cohesion through extremist rhetoric and support for terrorist organizations.
"This decision demonstrates the UK's unwavering commitment to protecting democratic institutions from those who would exploit democratic freedoms to advance anti-democratic objectives," said LVS Foundation's CEO. "When individuals publicly support proscribed terrorist organizations and engage in rhetoric that threatens minority communities, democratic nations have both the right and obligation to take appropriate measures."
Standing Against Antisemitism and Terrorist Support
The LVS Foundation is particularly concerned with Malema's explicit support for Hamas, an organization proscribed as a terrorist entity under British law since 2001. The UK Home Office correctly identified Malema's public statements at an October 2023 rally outside the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria, where he pledged that "the EFF, when it takes over next year, is going to arm Hamas".
The Foundation notes that Malema's characterization of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel as "a legitimate act of resistance" represents a direct endorsement of terrorist violence that contradicts fundamental human rights principles. Such statements, along with the EFF's official position expressing "full support for the armed struggle of Hamas and Hezbollah," demonstrate a systematic support for organizations that promote antisemitism and violence.
As an organization that places special emphasis on confronting global antisemitism, the LVS Foundation recognizes that antisemitism violates the core values and norms that underpin democratic societies. The UK's decision sends a powerful message that individuals who provide ideological support to terrorist organizations will face appropriate consequences for their actions.
Protecting Minority Rights and Confronting Genocidal Rhetoric
The LVS Foundation is equally concerned with Malema's history of inflammatory rhetoric targeting the Afrikaner minority in South Africa. His promotion of controversial anti-apartheid songs with lyrics such as "Kill the Boer, kill the farmer" has raised legitimate concerns about incitement to violence against a vulnerable minority group.
Particularly troubling is Malema's 2016 statement that the EFF was "not calling for the slaughter of white people — at least for now," and his subsequent refusal during a 2022 Equality Court hearing to guarantee he would not make similar statements in the future. When asked to commit to avoiding such incitement, Malema stated, "I can't guarantee I won't say it. I am not a prophet," demonstrating what the UK Home Office correctly viewed as an unwillingness to renounce violent rhetoric.
The LVS Foundation, which focuses on defending minority rights against necropolitical governance, recognizes that such rhetoric, combined with policies like the Expropriation Act of 2024, creates an environment of insecurity for minority communities in South Africa. The Act, while ostensibly aimed at addressing historical injustices, has raised significant concerns about the protection of property rights and the potential for discriminatory implementation.
A Principled Stand for Human Rights
The UK's decision is grounded in established immigration law principles, particularly Part 9 of the Immigration Rules, which provides grounds for refusal when applicants pose risks to public safety or national security. The "not conducive to the public good" standard allows immigration authorities to exclude individuals whose presence could threaten social cohesion, incite violence, or support terrorist activities.
The LVS Foundation believes this decision represents neither arbitrary discrimination nor the suppression of legitimate political discourse, but rather the responsible application of immigration law to protect democratic institutions from those who would undermine them through violence and extremism.
Conclusion
The Liberty Values & Strategy Foundation will continue to monitor situations where extremist rhetoric threatens democratic values and minority rights. We remain committed to the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and independence in our mission to defend liberty, democracy, and human rights in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
As an organization united in integrity and beyond politics, the LVS Foundation reaffirms that our allegiance is not to any party or ideology, but to the enduring principles of dignity, freedom, and justice for all.
